[Class 29.] The shutters of an automobile &c. radiator are automatically regulated by a thermostat subject to the temperature of the engine cooling water and adapted to be moved into operative position relative to the shutter regulating mechanism by an operation, e.g. the release of the hand-brake or the opening or closing of the fuel or ignition circuits respectively, which the driver must perform in starting the vehicle. The thermostat 1 is disposed in a tube 2 in the radiator and is adapted to be moved forward to contact with the shutter-operating crank 6 when the hand-brake 16 is released su that as the temperature of the cooling water rises the shutters will be gradually opened. When the car is stopped, the thermostat will be withdrawn from its operative position, and the shutters closed by the action of the spring 19.
