Apparatus for calculating and mechanically and graphically representing quantities involved in problems of solution, evaporation, and like processes
394,968. Calculating-apparatus. CAMPBELL, W. H., 14, Brompton Square, London. Nov. 4, 1931, No. 30552. [Class 10 (i).] Apparatus is described for solving problems relating to solutions &c. by graphic representation of the values involved and the use of rectangular hyperbolµ. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 a fixed line C is marked on a base A and a straight edge B may be moved parallel to C and set according to a scale L graduated in volumes of solvent. At the point of origin of the axes, formed by C and L, is a vertical pillar G carrying slidably a template H by means of which and of an universally attached pencil J a series of rectangular hyperbolae, as Z, can be drawn on the base board. The edge B can be positioned in accordance with the quantity of solvent, and a cursor N, N1, or N2 may be shifted along a scale F or to a point on isotherms M, M1 according to the strength of the solution. The quantity of solute may then be represented by a hyperbola Z drawn through the intersection of the cursor and the edge B and problems concerning the crystalliazation, dilution, concentration, &c., of the solution may be solved by manipulation of the setting elements and the drawing of further curves if necessary. The application of the instrument for solving various problems, including ternary and quaternary solutions and the use of a log-difference scale E, is described in detail in the Specification.
