[Class 75 (iii).] In a frictional igniter with a displaceable coupling disc with some play situated within the sparking wheel rim, the coupling disc 7 is arranged between two discs 17, 18 connected with one another, and just fitting into the sparking wheel rim 1, the discs 17, 18 being rotatable but not radially displaceable on the central pivot 8, and having eccentric oblong holes 21 corresponding in shape to a central oblong hole 9 in the coupling disc. A pin 15 which is connected with the actuating part of the lighter passes through the holes 21 in the outer discs 17, 18, and through a hole 14 in the disc 7. One half of the circumference of the disc 7 is formed with teeth 10, corresponding to teeth 6 on the whole of the inner surface of the rim 1. The disc 7 also has a recess 12 with a projection 13 which can engage with the bridge 19 connecting the two discs 17, 18. When fitted in a pocket lighter, the actuating member is the cover 16 which is pivoted on the axle 8 and carries the pin 15. The action is stated to be as follows :-The opening of the cover 16 causes the pin 15 to pivot the disc 7 about the projection 13 which is engaged by the bridge 19 and move it radially with respect to the axle 8, bringing the teeth 10 into engagement with the teeth 6 of the rim. Further movement of the pin 15 causes it to reach the ends of the slots 21, and the discs 7, 18, 19 and the rim 1 then move together, causing the production of sparks by friction of the rim 1 with a spring-pressed pyrophoric pin 3. When the cap is closed, the reverse motion takes place and the disc 7 is disengaged from the rim 1, which is held stationary by friction of the pin 3. The cap 16 has a part pivoted to it which is connected by a spring to the wick cap, which is pivoted to the supports carrying the axle 8. In a gas lighter, the axle 8 is mounted on a rod attached to a handle, and the pin 15 is mounted on a rod which can be moved in a direction parallel to the first rod by a trigger against a spring. A pin is pressed against the outside of the rim 1. The action when the trigger is pulled and released, and the second rod moves backwards and forwards, is as before.
