A new or improved product and process for obtaining same by the treatment of certainwaste material obtainable from coco-nuts and other vegetable products

The residue resulting from a retting or wet-treatment for the extraction of vegetable fibres, e.g. from the leaves and stems of flax, sisal, New Zealand hemp, Pita hemp, Pita grass, and from the enveloping matter of coco-nuts, cocoa-beans, &c., is utilized as a plastic composition by being rolled or pressed to the desired shape or form, with or without additional filling or binding materials. The residues may either be rolled or pressed in the moist state after the greater part of the fibre has been extracted, or they may be dried, ground or disintegrated, and mixed with suitable binding materials, with or without fillers, to form a plastic mass. Suitable additional binders are gums, waxes, natural or synthetic resins, linseed oil, shellac, bitumen, asphalt, rubber, &c. Suitable fillers are wood flour, whiting, cork dust, asbestos, animal or vegetable fibres, ground-nut shells, waste fibre or coir, bran, waste husks, &c. In an example coir waste and pith is dried, ground, and mixed to a plastic mass with rubber latex. Specification 363,651, [Group IX], is referred to.
