An artificial lava for use as an aggregate in bituminous concrete or asphalt is produced by causing earth or waste materials to travel substantially horizontally up to a region of fusion, and to pass through this region at a greater speed than that of their approach, the fused materials being discharged immediately after their passage through the fusion region. The rotary furnace described in Specification 398,872 may be used.
