405,784. Making rope couplings. DAVIES, F. P., and BOWDEN (ENGINEERS), Ltd., Victoria Road, Willesden Junction, London. Dec. 24, 1932, No. 36592. [Class 109.] An attachment such as an eye, hook, yoke, or stop is provided with a sleeve portion 2, of substantially uniform external diameter and having an internal surface 3 accurately worked to size with continuous or other ridges, and is of relatively soft and malleable metal so as to be contracted and embedded in the helicoidal grooves of the rope. A low carbon steel .1 to .2 per cent silicon and .08 to .15 per cent sulphur is given as an example of metal. The surface 3 may be screw-threaded or rifled, or both, the screw-threads preferably being flat or blunt topped. The contraction of the sleeve may be effected by a dead stroke press or by swaging, rolling, or fluid or steady pressure. The dics 5, 6 of a cold swaging press may have opposing grooves 7, 8 comprising segments of circles of the finished diameter of the work increasing in diameter at the sides to the original diameter of the work.
