409,506. Ironing-presses. CLARE, F., and ELLIOTT, H. W., 11, Queen Victoria Street, London. April 19, 1933, No. 11436. [Class 138 (ii).] In a press for garments or like textiles, employing a pair of relatively movable and electrically-heated pressing members, a horizontal tray for the garments is movable between the pressing members and is adapted to operate dampening screens. The tray may also operate the pressing members in such a manner that when the tray is moved between the members, the members are closed. As shown in Fig. 6, each pressing member comprises a pair of plates 5, 6 between which electric heating elements are accommodated. The upper and lower pressing members are carried by columns 7, 8 vertically slidable on the pedestal 1 and having racks 11 engaging a common pinion 10 which is operated by a foot-pedal 2 through a rack 12. Upon depression of the pedal 2, the pressing members are brought together against the action of a spring 14 secured to the column 8. Preferably, the pressing members are arranged to be counterbalanced in their separated position so that the force required to close the press is reduced to a minimum. An adjustable screw 21 is provided to regulate the downward movement of the upper hot plate to suit the thickness of the articles to be pressed. The articles are supported on a tray 24 provided with wire gauze sheets 26, 27 and having side rails 29 slidably mounted in supporting arms 30 to facilitate sliding the tray into or out of range of the pressing members. The tray is connected by cords 50 to dampening screens 37, 38 wound upon a spring-controlled roller 39 which is immersed in a water trough 40 supported on a pillar 32. The trough is connected to a regulating tank in which a predetermined level of water is maintained. The arrangement is such that when the tray is brought between the pressing members, the screens 37, 38 are unwound from the roller and are positioned above and below the tray. A roller 45 is adapted to squeeze out excess water contained in the screens as they are unwound a screw 46 being provided to adjust the pressure between the rollers. Each pressing member and the tray is provided with perforations 25 to allow the steam generated during the operation to contact with the articles being pressed. Recesses 44 formed by the insulating covers of the pressing members provide space for the collection of steam. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the foot pedal is dispensed with and the pressing members are brought together by the tray 24 and which is adapted to engage the free ends of bell crank levers 35 pivoted at 36, 36a and connected to the pressing members.
