[Class 46] A device for removing silt from coal-washing water comprises a trough-shaped tank C fitted with a grid E on which solid matter settles to form a filter-bed through which water filters into a compartment F. The water is withdrawn from the compartment F by a pump or ejector or through a fall pipe M. Surplus solid matter is removed from the bed and delivered to a shoot Y by a scraper conveyer D, slides G being provided to space the scrapers from the grid. The bed itself is removed at intervals by one or more sets of deep scrapers R, Fig. 4, a multi-way plug cock N on the outlet pipe from the compartment F being simultaneously turned so that fluid under pressure is admitted from a branch pipe to assist in the clearing of the grid. The valve may be operated automatically by levers S and links T moved by the scrapers R. Air collecting in the compartment F during filtration may be withdrawn therefrom by a small ejector. The wash water is supplied to the tank by a trough K and there is an overflow trough L.
