A rubber composite paving or surfacing mixture for sports grounds, polo grounds, tennis courts, football grounds, race tracks, roads, halls of houses, paths, floors and the like
A rubber composite paving or surfacing mixture for sports grounds, polo grounds, tennis courts, football grounds, race tracks, roads, halls of houses, paths, floors and the like
A self-vulcanizing composition for use on roads, walls, and floors of houses and sports grounds comprises coir dust, peat dust, wood flour, or sawdust, and rubber latex in the proportions of from one to five of dry rubber to one of coir dust, together with the following vulcanizing agents: 3 to 15 per cent of colloidal or precipitated sulphur, 1/2 to 1 per cent of an accelerator such as diphenylguanidine, quinoidine or piperidine, 2 to 3 per cent of an activator such as zinc oxide and if necessary 1/2 to 1 per cent of an anti-coagulant such as ammonia or caustic alkali, all percentages being calculated on the solid content of the latex. The composition is left to stand, e.g. for 24 hours in the tropics and longer elsewhere to effect partial vulcanization and then applied to the surface to be covered. Instead of rubber latex a reversible latex concentrate produced by centrifuging, filtering or evaporation may be employed. The composition may be applied by itself, or on strips or layers or woven sheets of coconut or coir matting, or in the form of portable sections. To each side of such a layer may be fastened a sheet of expanded metal and these compound sheets fastened to the surface to be covered by screws or pegs. After partial vulcanization in situ the surface may be rolled and corrugated. The surface may be top surfaced with a bitumen or rubber-bitumen emulsion and covered with a screen of sand or gravel or granite chips. A portable section may comprise a sheet of rigid expanded metal faced on each side with a layer of coconut or coir matting and embedded in the composition. This section, when partially vulcanized, is pressed to remove surplus water and may be top surfaced with one or more coats of rubber or rubber-bitumen emulsion followed by a screen of sand or gravel or granite chips, or with a self-vulcanizing layer of rubber with or without fillers. The undersides of the sections are preferably coated with a bitumen or rubber-bitumen emulsion or water proof paint. The sections are fastened down by screws or pegs and the interstices between them are filled with a bitumen or rubber-bitumen emulsion.
