[Class 70] In apparatus for vulcanizing soles to uppers, a mould has an upstanding flange which defines the shape and thickness of the sole, and a sealing strip attached to the top surface of the flange and extending into the welt-line of the sole, so that the whole of the upper is exposed to the air during vulcanization. The mould consists of a sole plate D and side dies D to the upper surface of which are attached strips H of insulating material. The side dies slide in conveying guides c1 in plates C on a heated platen, the sole mould D1 being kept in register by transverse bars d2 which slide in grooves d3. The shoe is pressed into the mould by a screw e2 in a clamp arm e1 bearing on metal sole plates with an interposed rubber pad. The mould sections are drawn together and separated by the swinging of the clamp arm, to which they are connected by lugs d1, plungers e8, e10, a flexible wire e9 and coil e13, Fig. 3. The moulds may be mounted on the faces of a multi-sided rotatable platen.
