[Classes 70 and 87 (ii)] In apparatus for moulding and applying rubber composition soles and heels to footwear of the type having a mould comprising a bottom part A which moulds the bottom of the sole and heel and fits within two side parts B which mould the sides of the sole and heel and are capable of being moved apart, two fluid pressure cylinders and pistons are provided one b12, b11 for opening and closing the side mould parts B and one h5 h4 for pressing the rubber composition during the moulding and vulcanizing operations by moving the shoe upper towards the part A. In the apparatus shown the bottom mould part A is mounted on a table F and the side mould parts B are slidably mounted in a guide bed G supported on springs g carried by the table F ; knife edge bearings f, Fig. 4, engage recesses in the bed G, when the bed is in its raised position, to limit the upward movement of the bed and to maintain it in a centralized position during the opening and closing of the side moulds B. The side mould portions B are connected to the piston b11 of the double acting pressure cylinder b12 for opening and closing them by mechanism b, b1, b4 .... b10. The pressing of the rubber composition is effected by a stud h on a presser arm H pressing on the top of the last having the shoe upper thereon, one end of the arm H is pivoted to lugs f4 on the table F and the other is connected'by links h1 to the piston h4 of the double acting pressure cylinder h5. The side moulds B have fixed to the top thereof an inwardly projecting metal sealing strip C which follows the junction line between the upper and the sole and heel. The bottom mould A and the side moulds B are interchangeable for making different sizes and shapes of footwear and are electrically heated. A number of the units shown in Fig. 1 may be mounted in rows on a rotatable framework so that each row of units is offset to the axis of the rotatable framework, as shown in Fig. 4, to facilitate working.
