[Class 34 (ii)] Apparatus for drying or conditioning articles, for example, cigarettes, comprises a rotatable chamber having a heated surface or surfaces therein, and a movable member arranged to extend through and reciprocate in the chamber to convey the articles therethrough and to be rotatable therewith, the member supporting the articles whilst moving in one direction, and being inverted before moving in the opposite direction during which latter movement the articles are supported by the walls of the chamber. In. the construction shown, cigarettes 1 are delivered from a belt 2 to fluted rollers 3 which deposit them on slidable trough-shaped members 6. These members are adapted to pass through drying or conditioning chambers 7 mounted on a circular carrier comprising discs 8, 9 carried by a spindle 10. The chambers 7 are heated by electric heating elements 27 arranged in series. As the carrier is rotated each trough 6 is engaged at one end by a fixed cam 13 whereby it is pushed into a chamber 7. The cigarettes in the trough fall out into the chamber as the trough becomes inverted during the movement of the carrier through half a revolution. During the second half of the revolution a cam 20 engages the end 17 of the trough 6 to move it back to position for receiving further cigarettes. As the carrier continues to rotate the cigarettes are intermittently moved through the carrier in a direction parallel to the axis of the spindle 10, finally falling on to a plate 21 leading to a conveyer 22. The troughs 6 are formed with slots to engage guide rails 18, 19 which are secured to the chambers 7 and are held detachably by springs in slots in the carrier.
