448,950. Ceilings; supporting lamps. WILLIAMS, H., 2, St. Andrew's Place, Gardiff. Feb. 4, 1935, No. 3501. [Class 20 (iv)] [See also Group XI] A ceiling for a cinema, theatre, hall, or other public building, comprises joists b, c, which are supported by the roof trusses a and are arranged in sets or rows to define rectangular or other openings, and readily detachable and interchangeable panels h, which are received in surrounds d bounding the openings and secured to the joists, the junctions between the surrounds and the joists being covered by moulded or other ribs g secured to the underside of the joists. The panels h seat directly in the rebated upper edges f of the surrounds d as shown in Fig. 4. The panels h may be of metal, hard wood, fibre, fabric-covered wood, &c. To modify the acoustic properties of the building, the panels may be replaced by panels of another material or they may be redecorated with paints of different densities. In a modification, the panels may be provided with opposite faces having different coefficients of sound absorption so that some or all of the panels may be reversed to change the acoustic properties of the building. Adjacent a wall, a curved plaster moulding n, Fig. 7, extends from the wall to a rib m secured to a panel surround d. To facilitate changing the panels, walkways are provided above the ceiling in the form of boarding t laid on joists q which are supported by blocks r on the lower members s of the roof trusses as shown in Fig. 8. An electric-light fitting i may be mounted on a panel h, or it may be carried by a frame j, Fig. 6, which replaces the ordinary surround d and is secured to the joists by bolts k.
