Improvements in or relating to the manufacture of crepe threads and crepe fabrics

[Class 120 (iii)] Threads of filaments of cellulose esters or ethers which have been stretched are subjected to crepe-twisting and at least the last part of the crÛpe-twisting is inserted while the filament is under the influence of steam. Preferably steaming takes place under such conditions that moisture is present. The amount of twist given to the threads is less than that required to secure a similar crÛping power in a thread of the same final denier without a preliminary stretching operation, e.g. the twist is less than a maximum of 70 turns per inch for a thread of 160 denier, and 85 turns per inch for a thread of 115 denier. As examples of suitable stretched filaments there are mentioned those prepared according to th e processes described in Specifications 277,089, 323,790, [both in Class 120 (iii)], 370,430, 371,461 ; and 438,584, 438,585, 438,586, 438,587, 443,707, and 443,773, [all in Group IV]. The threads may consist of continuous filaments or spun discontinuous filaments, and may contain delustring, loading, or other water-insoluble compounds. The stretched threads may be prepared, twisted, and steamed in the manner described in Specifications 437,019 and 438,590. Suitable steaming apparatus is described in Specification 440,653.
