453,497. Variable - speed gearing. WILSON, E. B., and E.N.V. ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., 4, Hythe Road, Willesden, London. March 11, 1935, No. 7554. [Class 80 (ii)] [See also Group XXVI] Gearing for driving the supercharger of an internal-combustion engine at either of two speeds greater than engine speed comprises an epicyclic train 3, 6, 7 in combination with a multiplying train 11, 16, 17. The planet pinions 3 of the epicyclic train are mounted upon a carrier 2 attached to a driving shaft 1 driven from the engine and the annulus 7 drives gears 11 mounted on countershafts 12 with the gears 16 which in turn drive the central gear 17 on a shaft 18 of the impeller 49 of the supercharger. The sun pinion 6 is attached to a member 19 freely rotatable on the driving-shaft 1 and adapted to be held stationary by a brake 29 so that the planet carrier drives the annulus 7 at an increased speed. A one-way clutch 33, 34, 35, 36 of the Humfrey-Sandberg type is provided between the member 19 and the driving shaft 1 so that on release of the brake 29 the sun 6 is prevented from over-running the planet carrier so that the epicyclic gearing rotates solid for a direct drive. Thus two speeds of the impeller 49 both greater than engine speed are obtained by holding or releasing the sun pinion and its supporting member 19. This operation may be effected automatically by means responsive to change in atmospheric pressure so that when used on aircraft the higher speed of the supercharger impeller is brought in at high altitudes. The gears 16 of the multiplying train may also comprise centrifugal clutches 14, 15, 16. Specification 220,021, [Class 103 (i)], is referred to.
