[Class 85] In rotary deep-boring, the torque and bottom pressure are controlled by regulating devices either of which is adapted to be put into or out of operation independently, while when they operate in conjunction, each is at all times effective. A further independent regulating device may be provided dependent on the speed of rotation. In Fig. 1, a motor 1 drives the boring machine 3 through a tooth-pressure or other dynamometer 2 while the free end of the drill cable 5 is connected to a load measuring device 4. The dynamometer 2 and the device 4 are connected through a pivoted lever 16 to a switch 14 controlling a reversible electric motor 10 driving cable drum 9 whereby variations in the torque or drill pressure cause raising or lowering of the drill. The switch 14 is also manually operable. In the form shown diagrammatically in Fig. 2, the cable drum 61 is connected through worm gearing 60 and differential gears 58 to oppositely running hydraulic turbines 52, 53, supplied by pump 47 through connected needle valves 54, 55, one of which carriesa piston 57. The boring machine 20 is capable of yielding about the drill rods 21 and acts on a pivoted spring - pulled jet tube 41 through piston 22, a fluid link, piston 32, lever 37 and rod 39. The free end of the drill cable is connected to a piston 28 in a pivoted cylinder 27 to act on the jet tube 41 through a fluid link, piston 25, lever 36 and rod 38. Variations in torque or drill pressure or both move the jet tube to deliver through pipe 43 or 44 to one side of the piston 57 thereby moving the needle valves 54, 55, to vary the supply to the turbines 52, 53, and drive the drum 61 to raise or lower the drill rods. Cocks 24, 31 are provided in the fluid links. In a modified construction, the rods 38, 39 are arranged on opposite sides of the jet tube 41, pins on the latter entering slots in the rods. In Fig. 6, a pump 82 circulates fluid through pipe 83, valve box 84 containing spring-loaded cone valves 94, 95, and cooler 97 ; branch pipes 85, 91, are connected through valve 86 and pipes 87, 90, to opposite ends of a cylinder 89 containing a piston 88 through which the drill rods are raised or lowered. The valve 94 is adjusted by nuts 99, 100, according to the desired drill pressure while a torque-measuring device acts through lever 102 and cam 103 on the valve 95, variations in drill pressure or torque causing adjustment of the valves 94, 95, to effect raising or lowering of the piston 88. The valve 86 may be reversed to apply pressure to the drill when commencing boring. In Fig. 7, a further valve 108 is provided and is actuated through lever 111, cam 110 and chain &c. 109 whereby, as when widening the boreholes, the tool is lowered a given amount at each revolution. The cam 110 may be conical and slidable to give variable action.
