Improvements in apparatus for carrying out the synthesis of resins from glycerol and phthalic acid

To prevent deposition of phthalic anhydride in the outlet pipe 3 of a reaction vessel 1 in which synthetic resins are being synthesized from glycerol and phthalic acid, the outlet pipe is heated and the vapours pass to a collecting vessel 4 before flowing upwardly to a direct contact spray condenser 8 wherein the phthalic anhydride is precipitated as a sludge which is withdrawn from the collecting vessel by a pump 6. The reaction vessel is maintained under vacuum by means of a pump 12 which is connected through pipes 11, 9 and elbow 10 with the upper end of the condenser. The latter is provided with axially mounted jets connected to unions 14, 15 and 16, the sprays of water from these unions being directed upwardly, upwardly and downwardly, and downwardly respectively.
