[Classes 124 and 145 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] Consists in means for converting rotary into reciprocat-# ing motion and for producing combined reciprocating and rotary motion. A shaft a, Fig. 1, held against rotation but capable of moving axially, carries an integral eccentric portion b on which is rotatably mounted a sleeve c, a ridge f on the eccentric preventing relative axial movement of the sleeve. The sleeve has inclined faces c1 which bear against corresponding inclined faces d1 of relatively massive ends d united by a sleeve e. If this sleeve be rotated, the shaft a is given a reciprocating motion. In a practical form, Fig. 4, applicable to saws and other tools requiring to be reciprocated, the sleeve e is enclosed in a tubular housing h and the sleeve c is mounted on an eccentric member. b on a shaft a which is secured to a tool-holder o. The ends d have extensions i, k running in ball bearings l in members m, n secured to the housing h. In Fig. 6, the shaft a is fixed as regards both rotation and reciprocation and fluid-pressure is adapted to be applied to the outer faces of the ends d which then reciprocate and rotate, this movement being given to a shaft r. In a modification, the shaft a may be rotated to produce a reciprocation of the end pieces d. Further, with the shaft a fixed axially, both this shaft and the sleeve e may be rotated at different relative speeds to produce different rates of reciprocation of the sleeve e. The end pieces d being set 180‹ apart and being of relatively great mass, balance is obtained, and vibration due to reciprocation is greatly reduced.
