Improvements in or relating to heat treatment of tins, bottles and like containers containing fruits, vegetable, or any kind of food or preserved foods or the like
464,180. Cooking and cooling canned, bottled, &c. goods. DAVIES, T. E. July 24, 1936, No. 20562. [Class 49] Apparatus which can be used either for the heating or cooling of tins, bottles, or like receptacles containing food or the like, e.g. fruits, vegetables, or preserved foods, comprises an endless conveyer, preferably a chain e having universal joints, which carries the receptacles through a series of communicating compartments, the receptacles'travelling in water which heats or cools them and has a positive flow imparted to it by a pump k which circulates it through the apparatus, pipes n being provided through which steam is circulated for heating the water when the apparatus is used for heating. As shown, a tank a is provided which is divided into compartments by a medial vertical partition c starting from one end a1 and stopping short of the other end a11, and lateral partitions d, d starting at end all and stopping short of end a1. The endless conveyer e, the links of which travel on guides or runners, passes between and around partitions c, d and outside the wall of the tank a, and is driven by one of the horizontal wheels f, round which it passes, the wheel being rotated from a motor g by a band h, pulley i, and worm gear j. The pipes n are disposed under the conveyer runs and the supply of steam thereto is controlled by thermostats, or valves o, or both. When used as an exhauster, the water is fed in cool or cold with the receptacles, and travels slowly in the same direction as the receptacles, being progressivey heated as it goes along. When used as a cooker, the water is maintained at the same high temperature throughout and is circulated at fairly high speed in the direction opposite to that of the receptacles, and when used as a cooler cold water is fed in where the receptacles are discharged and travels slowly in the opposite direction thereto, the part where the containers are fed in being, if desired. heated when starting by steam, the heat being cut off as soon as the receptacles are fed in. An exhauster, cooker and cooler may be disposed end to end or side by side in series and one conveyer may be used for all.
