As washproof and abrasion-resisting finishes for coating yarns and fabrics and fixing the pile of plush and rugs, and as binding agents for pigments in textile printing, are used solutions of cold-swelling starch obtained according to the process of the parent Specification, wherein the heating of a mixture of the starch, a small proportion of water and the aldehyde or aldehyde-yielding substance on a rotary drum to remove the water and gelatinize the starch, while pressing the mass to a thin layer, during, or immediately before drying, is carried out in a neutral or alkaline medium. Substances forming synthetic resins with aldehydes, e.g. phenol, urea, thiourea, dicyandiamide, an aminotriazine, e.g. melamine, may be added before, during or after preparation of the modified starch. Solutions of the modified starch may contain fillers such as china clay and talcum, or dispersions of oil or of paraffin, or dispersions containing aluminium salts.ALSO:In the production of cold-swelling starch according to the process of the parent Specification, the heating of a mixture of the starch, a small proportion of water and the aldehyde or aldehyde-yielding substance on a rotary drum to remove the water and gelatinize the starch, while pressing the mass to a thin layer, during, or immediately before, drying, is carried out in a neutral or alkaline medium, and substances which form synthetic resins with aldehydes, e.g. phenols and amino compounds such as urea, thiourea, dicyandiamide, aminotriazines, e.g. melamine, are added before, during or after preparation of the modified starch. To the modified starch so prepared may be added a starch which does not dissolve or swell in cold water, e.g. ordinary starch, thin boiling starch, oxidized starch. Substances forming synthetic resins with aldehydes, e.g. phenol, urea, thiourea, dicyandiamide, an aminotriazine, e.g. melamine, may be added before, during or after preparation of the modified starch. Solutions of the starch so prepared may be used as adhesives, e.g. for 3-ply wood manufacture, for sizing paper, as binding agents for granular, fibrous and pulverulent materials, and as sizing and finishing agents for textile fabrics, such sizing and finishing agents containing, if desired, fillers such as china clay and talcum, or dispersions of oil or of paraffin, or dispersions containing aluminium salts.
