480,311. Coating bakers' and confectioners' goods. MACFARLANE, R. F., PRESCOTT, W. E., and BAKER PERKINS, Ltd. Aug. 17, 1936, No. 22571. [Class 28 (i)] A machine for applying cream or the like to biscuit or like shaped articles comprises a member, having a series of mould recesses moving in a closed path, said recesses having false bottoms or pistons which are movable to permit filling of the recesses with cream and to eject the cream shapes on to travelling biscuits. As shown, the member is a drum 10 rotatable on a shaft 20 and having peripherally spaced recesses 11 in which the pistons 13 are arranged. The pistons are moved radially inwards, against the action of returning-springs 33, by rollers 26 engaging a cam rail 27 which is adjustable to vary the thickness of the cream shapes, by a manually adjustable eccentric member 30 and a link 31, the member 30 being locked in its adjusted position by a nut 32. Rotation of the blocks 25 carrying the rollers 26, is prevented by flattened parts 28 slidable in the housings 15. The cream is supplied from a hopper 34 having stirring paddles 39. The cream in the recess is strickled off by one side of the hopper, and the other side of the hopper has an opening adjacent to the drum, and side plough member with leather wipers are secured to the hopper to direct cream, adhering to the drum, towards the opening for return to the hopper. After a recess 11 leaves the hopper, the piston 13 moves to push the cream shape proud of the surface of the drum from which it is removed, when registered with a biscuit travelling beneath the drum, by a taut wire stripper. The biscuits may be carried on a conveyer having a number of spaced biscuit-engaging means, or the conveying means described in Specification 313,017, [Class 28 (i)], may be used. The drum may have more than one circumferential row of mould recesses, and interchangeable drums with differently shaped recesses may be provided. In a modification, each pair or set of diametrically opposed pistons are carried by a common rod which is actuated by a spring-returned bell-crank lever having a roller-end which contacts with a cam comprising two side by side cam discs, one fixed and the other movable relatively thereto for adjustment of the operative form of the cam, the thickness of the cream shapes being thereby determined. In a further modification, each piston is independent and operated by its own bell-crank.
