[Class 111] Arms 14, 16, which carry respectively a scumming-blade 13 and a sludge scraper 17 are mounted on shafts 15, 22, on a structure 12 travelling over a rectangular settling-tank. The shafts are intergeared so that the blade and scraper can be lifted simultaneously above the liquid level from the operative position in which they sweep the scum and sludge respectively towards a trough 29 and a sump 10 at one end of the tank. A clutch may be incorporated in the gearing which can be disengaged to allow the arms 14 to be raised independently by a winch or wormgearing on a platform 31. The arms 16 are connected by ropes or chains 18 to gearing 20 driven by an electric motor 21. The scummer may be perforated and have its front face hollow, V-shaped or box-shaped, so that floating matter is lifted to a position in which it can be pushed and scraped away along the scummer. As shown floating matter is pushed up an inclined member 28 into the trough 29. which may have a grid-like cover 28a. In order that the blade may move up the member 28, the arms 14 are provided with an overlapping hinge joint 30. Liquid may be delivered to the tank through a pipe 25 opening under a deflector 27. The carriage 12 may be cross-traversed to another tank by means of a carriage 35 moving on rails 36. Specification 482,379 is referred to.
