Process and apparatus for the application of designs such as marbling, colouring or other decoration to articles made of thermo-plastic materials
484,751. Printing on moulded articles; inking - apparatus SOC. ANON. DES ETABLISSEMENTS GRUMBAR. April 15, 1937, No. 10759. Convention date, Dec. 15, 1936. [Class 100 (ii)] Articles such as knife handles, counters, buttons, plaques, buckles, or hair-slides, made from moulded thermoplastic materials, such as casein, celluloid, "Galalith" (Registered Trade Mark) artificial horn, or albumen, are decorated on the back and front in a substantially identical manner prior to the final moulding of the material, by means of movable printing- members, so that the decoration appears to extend right through the article. The articles may be moulded under light pressure before decorating and moulded under high pressure and high temperature to the final shape. As shown, articles fed down an inclined runway I with adjustable sides 2 pass between the printing-rollers 9, 9a of a number of successive units, the rollers 9 being supplied with colour by rollers 8 to which colour is supplied by pipes 10 from tanks 11, and the rollers 9a being supplied in a similar manner or by messenger rollers. Excess colour dripping from the rollers 9, 9a is collected and passes by pipes 14 and a gutter 15 to a tank 16. The rollers 9, 9a may be covered with felt, fabric, fibres, or rubber, and the surfaces may be irregular for producing vein markings. Also, the rollers 9, 9a may be displaceable along their shafts to vary the colouring effects.
