485,856. Sliver - billing machines. FAIRBAIRN LAWSON COMBE BARBOUR, Ltd., and BEE, J. R. Oct. 24, 1936, No. 28922. [Class 120 (i)] A sliver - balling machine having measuring mechanism of the type in which means are employed for ejecting the finished ball or roll when a predetermined length of sliver has been wound and in which a defective roll may be ejected by hand, comprises devices controlled from the delivery rollers of the carding or like machine from which the sliver is supplied so as to cause the ejection of a completed roll and to wind-up a weighted chain upon a drum which when released by the measuring devices or by hand will re-set the measuring devices in their initial positions. The sliver is delivered to the balling mechanism through guides 2, 5 by rollers 3, 4 having associated change-gearing 6, 7, 8 driving a shaft 13 and worm-gearing 16 17, 19, 20 the worm-wheel 20 being fixed to a chain drum 20a and having a projection or pin 22 extending laterally therefrom and being mounted freelv on a stud 21 and driven anticlockwise. The projection 22 engages a pin 23 extending from a weighted lever 24 and thereby lifts a projection 4b on a lever 24c vertically, until, the pin 22 passing beyond its end, the projection 23 descends under gravity and the lever 24c returns to rest against a member 25. In rising, a lateral projection 26 on the lever 24c comes in contact with the rear surface of a plate or projection 27a on a lever 27 pivoted at 27b and lifts the top end of the lever 27 until it passes beyond the end of the projection 27a. In descending, the projection 26 strikes the front of the flange 27a and the lever 27 then moves clockwise and a pin 27c thereon engages a lever 27f so that its lower end 27d strikes against and raises a rod 28. A collar 28a thereon then raises the end of a lever 29 and carries a projection 29a thereon from between discs 30 which are then brought together by spring action, the plates 30 then commencing to revolve and a cam surface 30a forcing the runner 31 of the lever arm 32 to raise the worm 19 out of contact with the worm wheel 20. The weighted chain 33a then rotates the wormwheel 20 clockwise until arrested by the pawl 34. The lever 29 may be operated manually.
