[Class 83 (i)] Moulds.-An ingot mould 1 for casting alloys of aluminium or magnesium &c. has a vertical slot 2 for the pouring spout 9 which is closed progressively by a water-cooled bar 3 as the mould is lowered. Only the upper part of the bar 3 may be cooled and the uncooled part or the whole bar may have its inner face 14 set back from the inner face of the mould. The bar may engage grooves in the sides of the slot and be reduced in width towards the inside of the mould as at 15, Fig. 3. The mould adjacent the slot may be cooled as by fluid circulating through hollow bars 17, Fig. 4, heat-insulated at 18.
