[Class 6 (i)] Apparatus for spreading materials on land, roads, &c. comprises a container or hopper mounted on wheels and having a valve-controlled outlet through which the material flows on to a rotary-disc spreader actuated by the road wheels, the valve being automatically regulated to vary the opening in accordance with the speed of the wheels so as to obtain a uniform spread of material over the surface area at all travelling speeds. The conical hopper A is carried by a frame mounted on a differential casing L in which are journalled the axles M, M1 of the road wheels F. The axles drive a vertical shaft J through differential gearing M2, M3, M4 and a pinion K. The shaft J extends into the hopper A and carries a slidable conical valve C controlling the hopper outlet B, the degree of opening being regulated by governor mechanism D mounted on the shaft J and enclosed by a hood E. The valve C rotates with the shaft J and is connected to the governor by a sleeve on which agitators H may be secured. A conical baffle P on the shaft J directs the material on to a ribbed disc Q keyed on the shaft J. The casing L may be filled with lubricant, and the apparatus may be connected to a motor lorry or other tractor.
