499,019. Sealing doors and other openings. NEWTON, J. T. July 17, 1937, No.24189/38. Divided out of 499,035. [Class 20 (iii)] Doors, windows, &c. are hermetically sealed by inflatable tubing fitted between the doors &c. and their frames and simultaneously inflated through a valve actuated by an electric relay when all the doors &c. in the building are closed. As shown in Fig. 1, applied to a combined casement and fanlight window, the sealing- tubes 3 are fitted in channels 4 in the framing 5 and inflated through tubes 6 connected to a compressed-air supply 16, Fig. 4. In the open positions of the windows &c., the channels 4 are closed by spring-pressed plates 14 ; or, the channels may be covered by rubber strips which expand with the tubes 3 (on inflation of the latter) into the grooves 11 of the window &c. Fig. 4 shows means for automatically closing the windows &c., and inflating the sealing-tubes, through the medium of a manually-operated control. Each window &c. is linked to the piston 48 of a cylinder 49 which is supplied with compressed air from the source 16 and, after closure of all the windows &c., compressed air is led by piping 47 to the tubes 3. For indicating the closure of the windows &c., and the proper inflation of the sealing-tubes, a master-switch 54, associated with the valve 55 which controls the supply of compressed air to the cylinders 49, is arranged in a circuit comprising signal panels 56, 57 fitted with lamps 58, 58a, . . , 59, 59a ... Pairs of switches 61-62, 61-63 included in the circuits to the panels 56, 57 are opened, to extinguish the corresponding lamps, by the closing of the windows &c. and the inflation of the sealing-tubes. Specifications 498,992, 499,035, and 502,275 are referred to.
