522,626. Fortifications. GOLDSCHMIDT, R. July 22, 1938, Nos. 21764 and 31920. [Class 20 (i)] [Also in Groups XXI, XXXVIII and XL] An endless flexible cable A, Fig. 1, which may serve as an air barrage, is maintained in the air in the form of an arc by imparting to it a high velocity in the direction of its length. The cable passes around a driving pulley B and a reversing pulley C, against which it is pressed by pulleys D', DSP2/SP and is prevented from sagging therebetween by pulleys DSP3/SP. Modifications are described, some of which provide means for reducing the effective length of the cable. In Fig. 6 the cable passes through guide tubes GSP1/SP, GSP2/SP which may be moved to follow variations in the position of the cable due to wind pressure by motors MSP3/SP, MSP2/SP controlled by contacts H. K through circuits which are closed in sequence, by the cable itself and by the tube GSP2/SP. A modified control uses photo-electric devices. Fig. 13 shows an observation carriage W supported by the cable and anchored to the ground by a rope Y. In Fig. 14 the cable functions as an aerial and is coupled by an iron ring Q to a loop U connected to a receiver.
