522,727. Disinfectants and pesticides; medicines. DICKESON, T. W. Sept. 20, 1938, No. 18291. [Class 81 (i)] [Also in Group III] Water repellent disinfectant pesticidal and medicinal solid substances are rendered wettable by admixture with an insoluble gelatinous metallic hydroxide or oxide. The admixture may be made by intimately mixing the hydroxide and solid substance in the presence of much water and then progressively dehydrating to the required consistence which may extend from a thin solution to a powder. An alternative method is to mix the hydroxide and solid substance together with only sufficient water to form a paste and then to grind the mixture, diluting or dehydrating afterwards to the required concentration. The proportion of hydroxide is from 20-100 per cent. of the solid to be used. Examples of suitable hydroxide ores or oxides are those of aluminium, magnesium, copper, lead and zinc, the last three being prepared by precipitation from copper sulphate, lead acetate and zinc sulphate by caustic soda, ammonia and ammonia respectively. Examples of water repellent solid substances are sulphur, carbon black, derris powder, pyrethrum, thiodiphenylamine, lycopodium, guaiacium carbonate, dry vegetable fibres, synthetic dyes and mustard. Protective colloids such as glue or albumen may be added. These dispersions may be added to emulsions and used as insecticides, disinfectants, preservatives, sheep-dips, blow-fly pest sprays, fumigators, or medicinal preparations for internal or external use. Examples of these products are given which mav contain paraffin oil, cotton seed oil, turpentine, kerosene, carbon tetrachloride, naphthalene, nicotine oleate, cresols and organic thiocyanates such as that sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Lethane 384 " in addition to the metallic oxide or hydroxide and water repellent solid substance according to their uses.
