534,854. Float valves. FLIGHT REFUELLING, Ltd., COBHAM, Sir A. J., and TRIPP, E. J. Aug. 19, 1939, No. 23985. [Class 135] A valve device particularly adapted for controlling the delivery of fuel to the tanks of aircraft comprises a pipe 3 extending downwards in the tank and provided with a lower portion 6 constituting a valve seat with delivery ports 7 and a float-actuated sleeve 8 slidable over the valve seat. As shown in Fig. 1, the sleeve is formed with a part of larger diameter slidable in a guide sleeve 9 to provide a shoulder acted on by the fluid in the pipe 3 as the valve nears its closed position. Small apertures 10 are formed in the sleeve or pipe 3 to prevent a vacuum forming in the guide. The shoulder is also subject in the closed' position to the difference in the static heads in the delivery pipe and banks until such time as leakage past the valve has equalized these pressures. The valve is actuated by an annular float slidable on the pipe 3 and connected by a series of links and levers to the valve at 16. A spring-loaded relief valve 7 is arranged in a ported fitting 20 formed in the lower end of the pipe 3. In a modification, the annular float is replaced by a hinged float. According to the Provisional Specification a plurality of floats may be employed. This Specification also describes a form in which the delivery pipe is hinged and has a float secured to it so that the discharge end is maintained just below the level in the tank. The pivotal movement of the delivery pipe is used to operate a rotary or flap valve incorporated in a filler fitting at or near the top of the tank. The same movement may be utilized either by direct or geared action to operate a contents gauge.
