537,394. Hydrometers. HUGHES & SON, Ltd., H., HUGHES, A. J., and WILL, A. M. S. May 30, 1940, No. 9450. [Class 97 (iii)] A hydrometer for ascertaining the mean specific gravity of a transparent liquid in a tank comprises a transparent chamber s and surrounding jacket v open at both ends and containing a thermometer sSP2/SP, float y connected to bottom of chamber by a chain of constant weight per unit length and a scale ySP1/SP. The chamber s &c. upper and lower platens aSP1/SP, a with facings bSP1/SP, b form valves with the open ends of the chamber s &c. and are mounted by an upper plate c and rods d, the upper plate c having a shackle h for a manipulating cable r. The upper platen aSP1/SP is slidable on the rods d under the influence of springs and is provided with a latch k passing through a slot m in the plate c and engageable with the plate c by a cotter p provided with a cable q. The platen aSP1/SP is connected with lost motion to the chamber s &c. In operation the apparatus is lowered into the tank and at the required depth cotter p is withdrawn allowing the platen aSP1/SP to descend to close the upper end of the chamber s &c. The platen aSP1/SP and chamber s then descend to close the lower end of the chamber s &c. against the lower platen a. The whole apparatus is then withdrawn from the tank and the requisite readings taken of the liquid trapped in the chamber s &c.
