This treatment effects an extraction of all compounds of an acid character. The lye, the strength of which is preferably between 35‹ and 42‹ Be, may be diluted with water to form an aqueous solution which on treatment with an acid separates into two layers, the upper layer consisting of the extracted organic acidic substances.
