[Class 38 (iv)] Switching control.-Two or more electrical precipitation apparatus 2, 3 for treating gases are supplied from a single high voltage source 1 through alternative leads 6, 7 of different impedance. Each apparatus has an impedance 16, 17, which may be adjustable, in its individual circuit and a three position switch 9, 10 whereby it may be supplied through either lead or be earthed. Different effective voltages may thus be applied to the electrodes of each apparatus. The voltage of all may be simultaneously adapted by means 4 which may vary the input voltage to a transformer feeding a rectifier. To prevent this transformer being energized on no-load and so avoid the excessive voltage which may arise in the voltage doubling circuit of the rectifier low tension 20 switches in parallel in the circuit of a no-volt coil 26 of a main circuit breaker are operated by couplings to the H.T. switches 9, 10 to cause the circuit breaker to open as the last apparatus in use is disconnected. The impedances 5, 16, 17 and milliammeters 18, 19, 29 as well as the high tension switches 9, 10 may be mounted on the cable sealing insulators 30, 11, 12 of the H.T. switch and of the apparatus respectively. The H.T. switches may be operated by handles with Castell locking devices whereby the treaters are opened after their removal from the switches when in earthing position.
