549,305. Ships; loading and unloading goods containers. KELLET, W. P. May 12. 1941, No. 6146. Convention date, May 17, 1940. [Class 78 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A ship for carrying goods containers is provided with rows of rollers on the decks and with means for hauling the containers along the rows of rollers. Preferably the decks are also provided with guides for trollies which are connected to the containers and are hauled by cables. In the construction shown the containers 1 are formed with skids 3 adapted to run on rollers 4 on the decks. Each container can be connected by a push-pull link 14 to a trolley 10 running in guides 9 arranged longitudinally on the decks, the link being connected to the trolley by a pin 15. Each trolley is connected to an endless cable 17 passing over idler sheaves 19 and driving sheaves 20 driven by electric motors (not shown). The hatchways extend from side to side of the ship as shown, and the cables 17 extend over the hatches and hatch covers. When a hatch cover is to be removed the cables are first removed, either by removing the sheaves 19 or by disconnecting the trollies from the cables. When the containers are drawn to their required positions they are locked in place by means of hinged arms 29, pivoted to the deck and adapted to be turned up to the position shown in Fig. 5, in which a screw 30 on the arm can be screwed into a corresponding socket 26 on the. container, one of these sockets being provided at each corner of the container. The containers may be lifted by slings engaging hooks 34, Fig. 3, but are preferably raised by means of slings 38, Fig. 9, carrying clevises 37 provided with pins 36 adapted to be inserted in sockets 35 in the bases of the containers. The pins 36, when in use, are prevented from slipping out of the sockets by means of locking pins 42.
