[Classes 51 (i) and 51 (ii)l In gas-fired lime and like shaft kilns, controllable amounts of gas and air are admitted centrally at the bottom of the kiln through watercooled nozzles some air being also drawn upwardly through the material in the kiln to act as a cooling medium. Fig. 1 shows one arrangement of central gas and air supply ports and passages comprising a central gas supply pipe 1 with downwardly directed gas nozzles 5 surmounted by a cap 24 and surrounded by a water jacket 2 in which air supply pipes 6 are arranged with downwardly directed nozzles and supplied with air by a valve controlled pipe 8 connected to a header 7. Supply and delivery pipes 3, 4 are connected to the water jacket. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which air is supplied by an annular chamber 6 cooled on one side by a water jacket 2, air being admitted adjacent the gas nozzles 5 beneath the top cap. In Fig. 3 the air is supplied by a series of channels 6 cooled by the water jacket 2 on one or more sides. Fig. 7 shows a kiln with central gas and air supply ports as described above and additional burners 21 in the walls of the kiln. Additional air supply is controlled by dampers 16, air admission means 15 and a damper 22 in the exhaust conduit 23.
