[Class 35] [Also in Groups XXII, XXIII and XXIV] In a machine tool such as a milling, turning, grinding, &c. machine of the kind in which the tool or work is driven by a belt change gear, the driven shaft of the belt gear may constitute selectively the primary or the secondary shaft of a, further change speed gear by which the tool &c. may be driven. The machine comprises a base 12 carrying a spindle head 16 which houses the upper pulley cone 28 and the toothed gearing 36, 38. An electric motor 20 is mounted on a platform 62 pivoted on a rod 68 rotatable in the base 12 and carrying a lever 78 for adjusting the vertical position of the motor and pulley cone 26 driven thereby when changing the belt from one pulley to another. The platform 62 is also adjustable axially along the rod 68 so that any of the lower pulleys may be connected by the belt to any of the upper pulleys. For angular adjustment of the platform the lever 78 is engaged with one of the arcuate series of holes 76, Fig. 2, in the base 12 and a short lever 80 attached to the rod 68 is thereby caused to engage the platform through a compression spring 92. The spring may be adjusted by a nut 90 to vary its opposition to the weight of the motor &c. about the pivot 68 and thus alter the belt tension. Axial adjustment of the platform is controlled by a spring plunger 97, Fig. 1, thereon engaging one of a series of annular grooves in the rod 68 and is indicated by a series of grooves in the rod adjacent the end of the platform. The pulley cone 28 may drive the tool or work holder 42 directly through the shaft 32, or for lower speeds the cone may be transferred to a shaft 35 carrying the pinion 38 engageable by a hand-operated yoke 40 with the gear 36 on the shaft 32 or the gears 36, 38 may be arranged selectively as a step up or step down gear. The rear end 19 of the spindle head 16 is hinged thereto to facilitate changing the belt and pulleys. Work &c. holders. The stationary work or tool is mounted on a table 56 angularly adjustable in a vertical plane about a pivot 58 carried by a slide 54 transversely adjustable on a longitudinal slide 52 which is supported by a saddle 50 vertically adjustable in a column 44 slidable horizontally in the bed 15.
