565,867. Bush extractors. GENERAL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., CROCOMBE, F. F., and TEGERDINE, G. E. March 16, 1943, No. 4296. [Class 61 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXII, XXV and XXXIII] A bolt, used particularly in aircraft wing root joints, is so constructed that it serves, in addition to securing the joint, as inserter and extractor for bushes forming a part thereof. The wing parts are formed with plates or straps 1, 2 connected by a bolt 8 with an interposed distance-piece 4. Bushes 9 are a force fit in the plates. The bolt has an enlarged centre part 7 threaded to engage the distance-piece To assemble the joint, the distance-piece is placed in position and one bush 9 is placed on the bolt and backed up by a nut 10. The bolt is then screwed into the distance-piece by means of its squared end 11. When the bush has been forced in sufficiently to seat the flange 12, the nut 10 is removed and the bolt screwed through the distance-piece and removed on the other side. The other bush is then inserted in a similar manner. The nut 10 is eased off, if necessary, the bolt is centred in the distancepiece and the joint finally locked by tightening the nuts 10 at both sides. To remove the bushes, the nuts 10 are removed and the bolt screwed first in one direction and then in the other so that the enlarged centre portion contacts the ends of the bushes. In a modification, separate set-screws are used at opposite sides of the joint and recesses between the threaded and plain portions receive circlips to effect removal of the bushes. The threads on the set-screws are of opposite hands and final tightening may be effected by turning the distance-piece.
