566,663. Compasses. NISBET, R. H., and SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Ltd. March 31, 1943, No. 5126. [Class 97 (ii)] A compass repeater of the kind described in Specification 562,049 comprises manual means, whereby a compass card and pointer are together moved or rotated to indicate the course upon which the aircraft is to fly and a signal receiving motor for operating the pointer independently of the compass card to indicate in sense and magnitude any divergence of the aircraft from the set course. The motor 11 is provided at one end with a trunnion 23 in bearing 9 and at the other end with posts 27 carrying a gear 29 secured to a boss 49 rotatable in a bearing 7 and having a flange constituting a compass card 51. A spindle is mounted for rotation in bearings in the motor casing and the gear 29, the spindle carrying a gear 41 in engagement with the gear 39 on the shaft 37 of the motor 11 and a gear 43 in engagement with a gear 45 mounted on a shaft 47 rotatable in the boss 49. The pointer 55 is frictionally mounted on the shaft 47. The course-setting means comprises a knob 35, shaft 33, and gear 31 in engagement with the motor gear 29, whereby the compass card is rotated to indicate the course-setting required and at the same time the pointer 55 is also similarly rotated through the gears 43, 41, 39, 45. If the pointer 55 is not correctly aligned with the lubber line 53 when the determined course is indicated on the compass card, the pointer may be brought into coincidence by means of a dog 69 pressed into engagement with apertures on the pointer and the pointer rotated against its frictional engagement with the pointer shaft 47. Divergence of the aircraft from the correct course will cause the motor shaft 37 to be rotated due to the signals received and through the gears 39, 41, 43, 45 will turn the pointer shaft 47 and consequently the pointer away from the lubber line in the sense and magnitude of such divergence.
