574,296. Distilling magnesium. SPOONER, E. C. R., and MAGNESIUM METAL CORPORATION, Ltd . (Permanente Metals Corporation, in part). Jan. 27; 1944, No. 1556. [Class 82 (i)] Electric furnaces, for the production of magnesium by the carbo-thermic method, comprise a combination of furnace wall 2 defining a sealed furnace chamber, electrodes extending into the chamber, means for feeding a reactive charge into the chamber, an outwardly flaring chilling nozzle 10 registering with an opening 9 in the chamber, and a removable sleeve 11 of refractory substance, which may be carbon, connecting the said opening and nozzle. The nozzle has openings 17 directed towards the axis thereof, means for supplying a chilling medium to the openings and a cooling jacket 20. The inner end of the nozzle wall fits in an annular recess of the axially extending neck of the refractory ring which protects it from the intense heat of the furnace and of the discharged furnace products. The furnace may be adapted to receive the reactive charge through the base. Specifications 381,115, 467,663 and 486,558, [Group XII], are referred to.
