578,591. Dropping bombs &c. from aircraft. IMBER, J., HEBARD, H. C., and IMBER RESEARCH, Ltd. May 31, 1943, No. 8666. [Class 9 (ii)] A cluster of aerial bombs, flares or other pyrotechnic devices 1 is releasably secured around a hollow axial rod 2 projecting from a head 14. Each bomb &c. has a two-part sleeve 3, 4 tightly clamped on it and each sleeve carries a socket 7 which is slidably engaged over a stud 8 on a flange 35 on the end of the rod 2. The other end of the rod is secured in a housing 9 in the head 14, which housing constitutes a cylinder for a charge of explosive 20 and receives a plunger 21 at the end of an inner rod 23. The plunger is normally locked in the cylinder by shear screws 22, and the rod 23 projects, at its other end, through the flange 35 and has a flange 27 which engages transverse slots 28 in bowed plates 29 also rigidly fixed to the sleeves 3, 4. An ignitiondevice 16, such as the fuze described in Specification 561,931, which operates when the cluster is at a predetermined height above the ground, fires a charge 18, the flash from which is communicated through tubes 24 to the bomb or like fuzes 25 and through a vent 19 to the charge 20. Ignition of this charge shears the screws 22 and forces the plunger 21 along the rod 2. The flange 27, interlocked with the plates 29'of the sleeve 3, 4, carries the bombs &c. 1 to the right, away from the head 14 and draws the sockets 7 off the studs 8. The fuzehousings 13 of the bombs &c. are thus released and dispersed. A radial plate 30, carried by the rod 2, is provided with the suspension eye 34 and steadying members 31, 33 for engaging the bomb rack. Specification 575,605 also is referred to.
