[Classes 46 and 111] Sediment or sludge is removed from a settling tank by a scraper or sweep device of buoyant construction attached to cables, chairs or the like connected to a travelling carriage so that the device is caused by its buoyancy and the pull of the cables to assume a suitable working position at the bottom of the tank. In the construction shown, a hollow tube 7 closed at each end and fitted with a scraper 13 of rubber or other material is secured to cables 3 by bolts 8 which pass through loop-ends of the cables and lugs 14 on the tube. The tube is buoyant but not sufficiently so to cause the device to rise to the top of the liquid in the tank. The scraper 13 may be directed forwardly to cut beneath the sludge'. The device instead of being hollow may be made wholly or partly of wood, weighted, if necessary.
