Articles of magnesium or magnesium alloys or surfaces of such metals are coated by the treatment described in the parent Specification, namely, with a melt of cuprous, silver or lead halide which melts below 660 DEG C., then with a fused melt containing dissolved alkali metal hydride, and finally with water. The melt containing the hydride, preferably in the proportion of 0.5 to 5.0 per cent. by weight may be fused caustic soda or potash or any other molten material which will dissolve the hydride and is inert thereto. The article may be transferred from one treatment to another in such a manner that its temperature does not fall below the melting point of the melts. For coating with copper the article is immersed for two to ten seconds successively in a bath of fused cuprous chloride at a temperature of 450-460 DEG C., a bath of fused caustic soda containing 0.5 to 5.0 per cent. of sodium hydride, a bath of water, and finally sprayed with water.
