[Classes 78(i) and 78(iv)] In loading and unloading apparatus for mine trams of the type in which loading and unloading stations are provided at each side of the mine shaft and in which rams are used to - push the trams into and out of the cages, the device for loading the trams consists of a conveyer 7 movable bodily in either of two directions to position it to deliver at either loading station and reversible in operation to convey in either direction. At the loading station there are two shoots 6a, 6b on opposite sides of a hoist 2, each for delivering coal into a tram from a scraper conveyer 7 mounted on a shuttle car 8 which moves along rails 9 between the two shoots. After a tram has been filled under shoot 6b a ram 33b causes it to-push an empty tram out of the cage 1 and under shoot 6a. The full tram is then hoisted to the pit head where it is pushed out onto a tipping platform 14a or 14b by an empty tram actuated by a ram 34a or 34b. On tipping the platform a pivoted side 17 of the tram is automatically unlocked and swings open to deliver the coal onto a conveyer belt 19. The tram under shoot 6a is then filled and the operation carried out in reverse.
