[Class 83 (iii)] A telecontrol mechanism for the feed and rotation speeds of drilling, boring, &c. tool spindles comprises a gear-box coupled with an axially displaceable sleeve in which the tool spindle rotates, a second gear-box coupled with the rotary drive means of the spindle, a coupling gear being provided between the driven shaft of the second gear-box and the driving shaft of the first box, sliding gears in the gear-boxes being connected with shifting cams driven by a common intermittent drive with a change-over gear, and interlocking contacting means controlling the driving-motors of the common cam drive and change-over gear. As shown, a drill spindle 2 is driven through bevel gears 4, 5 and fed by a rack 30 and pinion 29 operated from a motor 15 through changespeed gears 7, 14 and 23, 28 respectively, the latter being driven from the former by a shaft 20. Changes in the setting of the changespeed gear 7, 14 are effected by a lever 51 operated by bevel gears 53, 54 from a shaft 55 fitted with a splined gear 56 which may engage a fixed gear 62, or gears 58, 60 on opposite sides thereof, driven in opposite directions by bevel gears 65, 63 from a shaft 66 driven from a second motor 70, the splined gear 56 is raised or lowered by a cam 81 on a shaft 80 driven intermittently by a Maltese cross gear 41, 79 from a third motor 46. The member 42 may be slidden on its shaft by a lever 75 from a cam 73 on the shaft 66 to drive an alternative member 40 which drives a cam 37 operating the second change-speed gear member 28, the motor 15 is started or stopped by switches 17, 18. To change the feed speed the switch 48 is operated to start the motor 46 driving the Maltese cross 40 to move the cam 37 and sliding gear 28. When the index 49 shows the desired speed, the switch is released. For varying the spindle speed, the switch 91 is operated to start the motor 70 to drive the shaft 66 until the gear 42 is shifted to mesh with the Maltese cross 79 when the rotation is stopped by a switch 92-95 which also starts the motor 46 to drive the cam 81 through the Maltese cross 79 and shaft 80. As soon as the desired speed is indicated by the index 90, the switch 91 is released to stop the motor 46 while the motor 70 is reversed to its starting point. A cut-out 100 is provided whereby the spindle 2 and motor 15 may be disconnected to enable the former to be turned by hand for exchanging tools. The cutout is operated by the projection 68 when the shaft 66 has moved the sliding gear 7 to neutral position. Cut-outs 98, 104 effect the disconnection and re-engagement of the spindle.
