605,030. Aircraft arrester gear. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., and CHAPLIN, H. E. Dec. 12, 1945, No. 33663. [Class 4] Means for assisting the landing of an aircraft on the deck of a carrier comprises a strut f capable of being projected downwardly from the nose a of the aircraft, to engage a crash barrier wire, and a hook-like member u to prevent the wire from riding over the nose of the aircraft. The strut carries a deckengaging roller at its forward end, and pairs of rollers g, h, disposed respectively at the rear end and forward thereof, for engagement with channel shaped guides b, c along which the strut is projected and retracted. The portions b of the guides are horizontal, while portions c are inclined forwardly and downwardly, the rollers h moving along the latter to bring the strut into its operative position, the rollers g then engaging pockets d at the junction of the guide portions. Operating mechanism for the strut consists of toggle links m, n connected by a spring q to a bell-crank lever r, s and link t, the latter of which is connected to the undercarriage operating mechanism, whereby the strut is projected when the undercarriage is lowered. The hook-like member u is moved into its operative position by the projection of the strut, and is formed with a lug z which is engaged by the roller j during retraction of the strut to return the hook to the inoperative position. A spring link x is connected to the hook member in such a way that it passes through dead-centre positions when the hook moves into the operative, and returns to the inoperative position. The strut may be retracted manually with the undercarriage in the extended position, the spring q permitting the necessary lost-motion between the toggle links m, n, and the bell-crank r, s.
