Glucosides of polyhydroxy compounds of the cyclopentanopolyhydrophenanthrene series which contain at least one free hydroxy group in the steroid nucleus are obtained by reducing by means of an alkali metal and an alcohol an acyl glucoside of an hydroxy-ketone compound of said series with the simultaneous removal of the acyl groups by saponification. Suitable alcohols are n-propyl alcohol and isopropyl alcohol. In an example oestrone-tetra-acyl-glycoside is reduced with sodium and n-propyl alcohol to oestradiole monoglucoside.
