[Class 59] In a conical mill for grinding pigments and powders suspended in a liquid, the inner grinding member 6 is provided with longitudinal groves, alternate grooves being closed at one end and open at the other end to an inlet space, the remaining grooves being closed to the inlet space and open to an outlet space. As shown in Fig. 1 the inner member 6 has grooves 7 closed at their lower ends and open at their upper ends to an inlet space 8. Alternately with the grooves 7 are grooves 11 closed at their upper ends and opening at their lower ends into an outlet space 12. The member 6 is driven by a shaft 21 to which is pegged a collar 24 supported through taper rollers 25 on a sleeve 26 provided on its periphery with teeth 28. A hand-screw 29 screws through the wall of the machine and engages the teeth 28 to prevent the sleeve 26 from turning. The sleeve 26 threads into a sleeve 32, which in turn threads, but with a different pitch, into a socket 35 integral with a fixed plate 18: rotation of the sleeve 32 thus raises or lowers the sleeve 26 and hence the shaft 21. If the screw 29 is disengaged from the sleeve 26, the latter will turn with the sleeve 32, thus raising the shaft 21 more rapidly. As shown in Fig. 2, each groove 7 has its trailing edge slanted to form a wedge-shaped recess 40; each groove 11 is fitted with a scraper 42 acting upon the inner surface of the outer grinding member 5 and tensioned by a spring 43. A water jacket 45 is provided for cooling.
