[Class 83 (ii)] In a superheater for locomotive boilers a five-pipe element return bend at the firebox end is formed by forge welding small pipes 1, 3 to a larger pipe 5 in the same plane, shaping the junction 8, and flash welding thereto an extension pipe 10. Two small pipes 2, 4 are then forge welded to the pipe 10 and the end is closed by swaging. The firebox end portions of the pipes 2, 4, 10 may be of forge weldable heatresisting steel and the small diameter pipes may be corrugated and finned. In order to provide high steam velocity in the bend the pipe 10 is of smaller diameter than the pipe 5.
