618,834. Stranding, cabling, and rope-making machines. LARMUTH, L. J., and LARMUTH, A. Nov. 14, 1946, No. 33791. [Class 109] An electric stopping device for a stranding, rope making and like wire-winding machine comprises an electricity conducting member through which the wire passes without touching it when 'under tension in the machine, the conducting member being in an electric circuit insulated from the machine and electrically connected to a trip or stopping mechanism and being closed or short circuited when touched by a broken, slack or loose piece of wire. The stopping devices are mounted on the machine at any number of suitable positions, and in the form shown a single device mounted on the machine 6 comprises a plate 7 secured to the machine and mounting an inclined bracket 9 and a block 10 having a guide member for the wire consisting of a flared sleeve 11. The bracket 9 carries a tube 12 in which, insulated therefrom, is a second tube 13 of good electricity conducting metal, such as copper, carrying a terminal 14. In normal working of the machine, the wire passing through the tube 13 and the guide sleeve 11 is kept taut and away from contact with the tube 13, but on breakage, running slack or failing by emptying of the bobbin falls and contacts with the tube 13. An electric circuit is then completed of which the tube 13 and mechanism such as a relay to operate a trip gear for knocking off the machine, are a part, the frame of the machine constituting an earth for the current. The block 10 and flared sleeve 11 may be replaced by a guide pulley. In a further modification, the tube 13 may be arranged in a horizontal mounting between a pair of guide blocks having apertures lined with tungsten carbide &c. to limit the wear thereof. The tubular conducting member may be replaced by an apertured plate or pair of plates through which the wire passes.
