[Class 51 (ii)] Plant for the manufacture of cement in a rotary furnace includes a rotary cooler arranged beneath the furnace, said cooler being of decreasing section from the inlet to the discharge outlet and is traversed by a current of air entering partly through the lower extremity and partly through a device provided in the actual body of the cooler. The cooler 1 and pulverised coal-fired furnace 2 are housed in a surrounding brick structure forming essentially two chambers 19 and 25 interconnected by an aperture 28, the cooler being formed of cylindrical sections 5 and 6 connected by a conical section 7 equipped with lifters 18. The lower section 6 is disposed mainly in the antechamber 21 which receives the cold air, said section 6 having also an air entry 15 in the form of a star shaped conduit. Air may pass to the chamber 25 by the valve controlled conduit 23, part providing heated primary air for the burner 27 and part returning through the opening 28 to enter the conduit 15 joining air which has entered the cooler at the base to give a supply of heated secondary air.
